Renting a car from one of the big car rental companies is quite straight forward. They provide good service and have many locations but they often charge a lot and you have to make a special trip to the rental locations.
Renting from someone who lives close to you saves time and money but you're not quite sure what to look for? Here are some tips.
Check the car registration and ensure that the party renting the car to you is the owner or has the authority to rent the car to you. If the car is owned by a company, the person should be authorised by the company. Make sure that the car has third party insurance covered. Look carefully to see if there are any visual damages on the car. If there are, you need to notify the owner before you rent it.
Check the mileage of the car, the higher the mileage, the more likely the car may have problems. All four tyres should be firm and there should be a spare tyre at the back. Request for a test drive if you can so you can see if you like the feel of the car. While test driving, check the brakes preferably on a highway to ensure they work properly. Last but not least, check all the lights and the handbrake too.
If everything is ok, then you can pay a deposit to the owner and start renting!
